Are You Too Living a Life You Want to Escape From?

“.. As if I want to escape from my life”, a frase that stuck with me.

Few steps from the Niagara Falls (Author´s Collection)

Some time ago, in the middle of a coaching session a client whispered shyly that the year before she had taken too many weeks of holidays, almost as if she wanted to escape from her life.

“Escape from my life.” This stuck with me.

It stuck with me, not only because I have felt this in my life during overwhelming times, but also because it made me curious.

Why is it that we humans quite often fail to set ourselves up for success. Our beliefs and our expectations simply set us up for overwhelm more often than not.

We also tend to let things go, choosing to be reactive rather than proactive in our life.

Of course, I am not wanting to generalise here. There are plenty of people who have managed to build sustainable success and happiness throughout their life. Yet, there are plenty of those who are still trying hard to figure this out.

I know that age makes things easier. The older we get the more we realise that the most important things in life are the simplest things in life. But then again, we realise it probably just because we have achieved some level of security and confidence in life and finally grasp the concept of mortality.

It almost feels as if we can have the luxury to enjoy the simplest things in life when we are either “rich” or “poor”. In the first case, we have more time and freedom to think and enjoy, while in the second, it’s simply all we have got.

So what about in between? We hustle? We hustle not to fall to the first category and to be able to arrive to the second one? We keep going until we get tired, overwhelmed, sometimes even burnt out with carrying our responsibilities and pushing ourselves towards our goals.

And in the midst of this, more often than not, we humans forget to enjoy the ride and take proper care of ourselves. We start postponing our joy to the future. We postpone our dreams to the far away land.

For the longest time I have had this thought that when I retire I will start reading much more. Excuse me, but this is nonsense.

Why would I postpone something I love and enjoy so much for an unknown future date, with the possibility that it may never happen? Why would I not enjoy it now when it can bring me joy and actually even bring beneficial knowledge and inspiration for my current life?

Well I guess this is what we humans tend to do. Postpone. “One day, when this and that happens, I will.. (insert your dream here)” must be a common thought circulating in human minds.

What if there will not be that “one day”?

And what if we started to ask a different question?

What would become possible for you if you did choose to go for it (fully and completely) NOW?

What would a life that you don’t need to escape from look like for you?
